Around 1500, when this was painted, The Doge of Venice was a big job with many perks, including these beautiful robes and a portrait by one of the leading artists of the day - in this case Giovanni Bellini, who with his brother Gentile, did much to put Venice on the art historical map. Venice was a rich and powerful place that bridged cultures from East to West, and the Doge, elected to serve for life, was the face of that wealth and importance. This painting - this face - was widely influential in unexpected ways.
