What are friends without gossip? This painting looks simple - just a few friends on a Paris balcony - but the story includes a juicy tidbit or two. It caused quite a sensation when it was first shown, in part because of the colors, in part because of the way the painter portrayed his models, and in part because the artist based it on an earlier painting by another great artist.
